In the summer of 1776, in response to American rebels taking control of New York City, then and now, one of the most strategic parts of the continent, the British Empire sent over half its navy to New York harbor to take back the city and destroy the fledgling rebellion.

The Empire succeeded.

Specifically, the British:

* Killed and captured thousands of Washington’s small force.

* Took New York City which they held until 1783

* Drove Washington’s forces out of the state, across New Jersey, and into the Pennsylvania countryside

For all practical purposes, the war was over…until it wasn’t.

Is this story taught in US public schools?

Probably not.

Instead, they’re taught Washington was a slave owner. I wonder if they are also being taught that the British Empire was the dominant player in the Atlantic slave trade and was hard at work on a program to economically enslave everyone.

Probably not.

So we’re going to run this story every Christmas night as a demonstration of what a small, committed band with next to no resources can accomplish if they are willing to sacrifice comfort and ease.
