How the government gutted education
Starting in the 1970s, the US Department of Education and teachers’ unions began a war against teaching self-reliance to children.
We’ve reached the point where, in most school systems, students are not only poorly educated intellectually (as John Gatto wrote about extensively), but they also fail to learn basic life skills.
What almost no one talks about is the gutting of shop and home economics classes. These classes were not a joke. They were essential for children to develop the practical skills people need for life: how to cook, how to keep a home, how to fix and even build things.
Some kids are lucky enough to be able to learn these things from intact, functional families, but pre-1970s, it wasn’t left up to luck.
The systematic gutting of these systems was one of the worst things that ever happened in the US.
