I’m sure you’ve seen (or at least heard about) the 1944 film Gaslight, where a husband, Gregory, slowly makes his poor wife, Paula, think she is going insane.
Paula notices odd occurrences, and Gregory insists she is making them up. (Of course, not only are they actually happening, but Gregory is behind it all.)
Well, the “powers that be” do an outstanding job of gaslighting us all, just like poor Paula.
