The Founders were against using religion as a weapon for political purposes.
Most US leaders treated the division respectfully.
But then the recent band of criminals – Reagan, Bush, Clinton, etc. – hijacked faith for political purposes.
Religion is a private matter. Using it as a political rallying point is playing with fire – as the Founders knew.
It hurts faith and hurts the faithful.
