For the past five years, she’s been providing healthy fresh produce at fair prices in a poor neighborhood that can accurately called a food desert.
Then a dispute with the city over her lack of a vendor’s license.
How did the city respond?
It called the Sanitation Department to take all her food and throw it in a garbage truck, $10,000 worth.
Their official justification: “It needed to be disposed of for the safety of the community.”
Mexico City has over 1,000,000 licensed street food vendors.
New York City has capped its licenses at 5,000 and treats legal immigrants who want to make an honest living serving their communities like criminals.
